Thin-layer scintillators
CCI325 thin layers are proposed to be configured as part of a multilayer structure comprising transmitting and stopping layers.
The latter is preferably a conventional scintillator block with significantly different luminescence characteristics, more specifically with different decay times like in a phoswich detector.

The advantages of such configuration are the wider energy range measurable with a thicker detector, the possibility of particle identification, and the miniaturization optimized for space applications. Besides, low-cost production enables its large-scale use.
The practically simplest design comprises a mm-range thick scintillator (layer 2) coated with a 30-50 μm thick CCI325 layer (layer 1) on the entrance side. The bilayer structure is covered with a light-tight aluminium foil. The light read-out is performed with a SiPM detector.
